How Do I Start To Fix My Credit Rating?

It's easy to ignore the problems that are created by a low credit score.  Thinking about your credit rating is not something most people do on a daily basis.  At some point it will become obvious that a bad credit score is holding you back.  For me the moment I realized I needed to fix my credit rating came when I tried to get a loan for car.

Having a bad credit score makes it very difficult to get a loan.  The problem is even if you have a decent score and you can get approved for one you going to pay a lot more in interest.  I didn't think an extra 2% in interest meant that much until I did the math.  Well it does, it can mean thousands of extra dollars.

The first thing that I did when I started to fix my credit rating was to get copies of my credit reports. Do this for free at the  www.annualcreditreport.com website.  You will still need to order your credit scores from the credit bureaus.  I would suggest ordering only one score to save some money.  While each score will be different at each bureau they should be very close.

Many times there will be mistakes on your credit reports.  When I started to fix my credit I noticed several mistakes.  These errors will bring down your credit scores.  What you need to do is locate these errors and file a dispute with the credit bureau.  If it can't be proved that these items are accurate they must be removed from your credit reports.

This process can be quite involved especially if you're dealing with multiple errors at different credit bureaus.  Keep in mind this is not a quick fix and it will take time and dedication.  One alternative is to use the services of a credit repair company.  They handle the disputes for you.  Keep in mind that they cannot do anything you cannot do for yourself.

The decision to fix my credit rating was a very good one. Spending the time to address bad credit scores will save you a huge amount of money in the long run. Don't put this off because the problem will not fix itself.
