Methods of Identity
Theft
There are several different methods that are utilized to steal a person's identity. Let's talk
about some of the more common methods that you need to be aware of so that you can avoid falling victim to this
terrible situation.
One of the most common forms of identity theft involves utilizing a credit card that you may have misplaced or
lost. This is a scenario where a person finds your wallet, or even steals it, and then proceeds to make various
purchases using whatever credit cards are found in your wallet.
Another form of identity theft can occur if your Social Security number is compromised and an individual is able to
open up various accounts using your name and information. The reason why this particular type of identity theft can
be so problematic is because even if you shut off whatever fraudulent accounts have been opened, the potential
always exists that your information can be used again to open new accounts.
Have you ever received an e-mail claiming to be from your bank? Believe it or not, yet another kind of identity
theft involves sending you wrote me e-mails that requests personal information from you that would otherwise seem
to be legitimate. This is a particularly insidious form of identity theft because it's really easy to sometimes
fall for these tricks because the e-mails that you are sent look quite legitimate on the surface.
Yet another kind of identity theft involves the distillation of special devices at ATM machines that read your ATM
or credit card information. This is typically referred to as card skimming.
As you can see, there are a wide variety of different ways in which identity theft can occur. We have only touched
upon some of the more popular methods -- but rest assured that there are many other ways that this type of
situation can take place. The great news is that with a little bit of common sense and precaution, you can
dramatically reduce the chances that you will be victimized by this type of fraudulent activity.
